The American soprano Carol Byers has in the last years focused on preparing various Wagner and Strauss roles.In May 1999 she celebrated her La Scala debut as the Farberin in Strauss’ Die Frau ohne schatten.Under the direction of Maestro Giuseppe Sinopoli she scored a great success in her role-debut of this demanding part. She will repeat this role with Sinopoli making her debut at the Dresden State Opera in 2001.Last year also saw her first Senta in a new production of Der Fliegende Hollander in Orlando ,USA.

At the invitation of Maestro Myung-Whun Chung Ms.Byers sang her first Leonore in semi-staged performances of Fidelio with the Santa Cecilia Orchestra in Rome January 2000, receiving rave reviews from the Italian press as well as drawing an enthusiastic response from the audience.

Carol Byers studied at Indiana University School of Music,Bloomington.Having been one of the finalists of the International Belvedere Singing Competition in Vienna,she was awarded a contract with the Wiener Kammeroper. She has been a regular guest at the Prague State Opera, performing in Un ballo in maschera (Amelia),Otello (Desdamona), Madama Butterfly, Tosca and Tannhauser (Venus). She has also appeared at the National Opera,Bratislava (Un ballo in maschera, La forza del destino), the Cairo State Opera (Un ballo in maschera); the Istanbul State Opera (Tosca) and Knoxville,USA (Tosca).In 1988 she made her role-debuts as Leonora in Il Trovatore in Prague and Aida in Cairo. She also sang Aida at the Open Air Aspendos Festival in Turkey June 1998, receiving a standing ovation from an audience of 15 000,and with the Ankara State Opera on tour in Denmark October 1999.

Carol Byers has also been much in demand as a concert soloist. She has taken part in performances of Verdi’s Requiem and Beethoven’s NinthSymphony all over Europe as well as Mahler’s ‘Resurrection’-Symphony in the USA.In Novara,Italy, Ms.Byers scored a perticular success in a concert singing Verdi and Puccini arias.She performed Wagner’s Wesendonck-lieder and the Immolation Scene from Götterdammerung in a special concert for the “Friends of the Vienna State Opera” and she was the guest-soloist in the New Year’s Concerts at Budapest Music Academy,1997 with Wagner and Puccini arias,and in 1999 with Verdi. In February 1999 Ms.Byers sang excerpts from Tristan und Isolde and the Final Scene of Salome in concert with the Erfurt Philharmonic Orchestra.Last year she also took part in the openning-gala of the Open Air Aspendos Festival as well as the opening of the Phlharmonic season in Ankara where she sang excerpts from Salome, Fidelio, and DerFliegende Hollander.

Other engagements include her first Abigaille in Nabucco in St. Margarethen Open-Air Festival,Vienna July 2000.She returned to Ankara to open their 2000/2001- season making her role-debut as Turandot, and in 2001 she sang her first Salome there.
